DIY Homemade Oatmeal Cat Litter

HunePants and I heard about an oatmeal based cat littler but then when we went online, we had the hardest time actually finding a DIY that showed us how to make one. After much trial and error we finally figured out our OWN formula and thought since we couldn’t’ really find one, we wanted to give you one that you could do for yourself.

This is great for those with allergies, pregnant women who can’t do cat littler with clay or anyone who wants to go organic and not have to buy or use those nasty clay and store bought cat litters. Plus I could never lift them and this way, I do’t have to anymore.

Ingredients are very simple:

• Steel Cut Oatmeal (or whatever is on sale)
• Salt ( you can also use Sea Salt but that tends to be more pricey though it Is more absorbent)
• Baking soda (Walmart has the big boxes for $1.84

 Directions:

You can do this one of two ways…

At first we just started mixing the whole oatmeal in with our clay littler and slow phasing the clay littler out. But as the oatmeal started being more prominent the scent was getting stronger. That is when we started using the baking soda. but then it wasn’t clumping and absorbing and we looked up what was the best absorber and salt was the top ingredient.

Then we realized if we ground up the oatmeal in our blender it would go through out kitty scoop better.

I have a Baby Bosch and I just poured the oatmeal in there and ground it up and poured it in. After about two months we finally had no more clay cat litter in our box and our cats were completely used to the oatmeal.

Now our process is this:

• Grind up oatmeal in blender or processor
• put in cat littler box
• add a layer of baking soda and salt
• grind up another layer of oatmeal and follow above procedure
• do above until cat litter box is filled to liking

That’s it!

Then as cat’s use, scoop out poop and pee into bags and toss as normal. repeat as necessary. Less smell, less odor, less inhale of bad stuff for you!

It can be a be a bit messy when we cats walk out so we bought one of those cat mat grippers as you see here so it grabs the oatmeal and we keep a little broom dustpan nearby, but I don’t think it is an messier than regular cat littler and I find it easier on the feet.

If we are in a hurry, we jut toss oatmeal unground in there.

I am showing this with the lid open but this is actually a closed lid container with a door and the cats do just fine and as I said the scent is fine.

We only grind the oatmeal as needed so then we have oatmeal to eat and oatmeal for cats. Multipurpose uses! We both feel so much better about our home and the cats aren’t coughing when they come out either (they were before).
